This past Saturday, September 30th , NY Rum Fest took place at Tribecca’s historic music venue, SOB’s (Sounds of Brazil). This event was the first NYC installment of The Rum Lab’s Rum Fest. The event’s origins began with California and Chicago installments by organizer Federico Hernandez, founder of the The Rum Lab.
Both NY Rum Fest daytime sessions impressively sold out their 250 person capacity, kicking off with an industry and VIP facing happy hour. Each session showcased an educational component featuring brands such as Mount Gay and Don Q and seminars from Richard Seale “Understanding Rum” and Bryan Davis “Rum in the 21st Century. The rums featured at NY Rum Fest ranged from local Queen’s distiller Owney’s and newcomers including Colorado’s Montoya Rum to heritage-rich and history brands like Rhum Clement.
It was a day full of spirited consumers and industry professionals brought together by their mutual love of rum. The convivial energy in the room and quest for knowledge of what was being poured showcased the rise of premium rum among spirit enthusiasts.
The tasting was followed by happy hour at The Rum House at the Edison Hotel in Times Square and closing party hosted by SPIRIBAM at Brooklyn height’s premiere cocktail bar, The Binc, where $2 of every cocktail was donated to relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
This inaugural year for NY Rum Fest proved to be an overwhelming success, and will no doubt set the ton for future rum-focused events in the Big Apple!
